RESEARCH INTERESTS
My research activities are focused on the effect of conservation management systems on soil quality, with emphasis on the dynamics and quality of organic matter in tropical and subtropical variable charge soils. More than 15 long-term experiments (10-30 years) involving tillage systems, cropping systems, winter and summer cover-crops, mineral and organic amendments and crop-pasture rotation systems have been conducted and evaluated concerning their effects on soil organic matter in the South and Middle-West (Cerrado) Brazilian regions. Rates of C sequestration are being estimated and the challenges are attain a better understanding concerning the main mechanisms of soil organic matter stability in our highly weathered soils, as well as to be able to link models (Century and DayCent) and geographic information systems in the modeling of soil organic matter at regional scale. Recently, the potential of no-tillage system and legume cover-crops based cropping systems on the mitigation of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane has been also evaluated at experimental scale.
