RESEARCH INTERESTS
My research interests are in the regulation of C and N cycling in terrestrial ecosystems by the interactions between plant, soil, and soil microorganisms, and the effect of global change and agricultural management practices on these interactions. I am also interested in determining the link between changes in the composition of soil microbial communities and alterations in the rate of C and N cycling. Currently, I am working on a project testing if there is limit to C sequestration in mineral soils of temperate ecosystems. Towards this end, I am examining C sequestration in soil organic C pools that are distinct in physical and chemical properties and thus associated soil biota activity. I am also investigating the feedback mechanisms between plant production, soil structure, and N-cycling microorganisms under elevated CO2 and O3 at the Soy FACE (Free-Air Carbon Dioxide Enrichment) experiment in Illinois. At the LTRAS (Long Term Research on Agricultural Systems) experiment of the Center for Integrated Farming Systems in Davis, CA, I am examining how organic, conventional, and low-input farming systems differ in long-term C and N cycling.
