RESEARCH INTERESTS
I’m an ecosystem scientist, investigating C and N dynamics and soil structure in terrestrial ecosystems (mainly agro-ecosystems). My research interests are in the mathematical description of soil aggregate dynamics, and how aggregate dynamics affect soil organic matter dynamics. I’m also interested in the modeling of C and N dynamics, and greenhouse gas emissions in agro-ecosystems at regional scales (counties to countries). Currently, I’m working as a postdoctoral fellow on a project that investigates the potential to mitigate global warming of alternative management practices such as winter cover cropping, no-tillage, or organic practices. We are calculating these potentials at the county scale. We are developing the techniques with Yolo county in California. This biogeochemical model will be coupled top a micro-econometric model which simulates the complex human decision making process of a farmer. The result of this exercise will be the development of a carbon supply curve, and the evaluation of a carbon credit market in which farmers are subsidized for their efforts to sequester carbon.
I have a PhD from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium, under the supervision of Dr. Roel Merckx. For my PhD I developed techniques to measure and describe aggregate dynamics as related to soil organic matter dynamics. I did one year of post-doctoral research working on the same theme before I joined the Six lab in UCDavis. I have M.Sc. in Bio-engineering, and a M.Sc. in statistics, from the above-mentioned university.
