This quiz will show you pictures of various plants and ask you to type in the appropriate latin binomial. There is only one correct answer and the spelling has to be exact. Be sure to capitalize the genus but not the specific epithet. To see any image at a higher resolution, just click on it.

Example:

About this plant

Acer macrophyllum
Acer
Big leaf maple
Aceraceae

Note:
  • Whenever possible, you should give the full scientific name of the species (ex: Calliandra tweedii).
  • If the species is unknown, you should give the genus followed by "sp." in lower case (ex: Ephedra sp.).
  • If the plant is a hybrid, there should be an "x" between the genus and the specific epithet (ex: Platanus x acerifolia).
  • If there is a known cultivar name, it should appear in single quotes (ex: Abelia 'Edward Goucher').
  • If the cultivar is unknown, you should put "cv." in lower case at the end (ex: Prunus cerasifera cv.).
  • If you enjoy this stuff, you should become a taxonomist.
