Letter to Carl Pope, President of the Sierra Club, 4 February 1999

Dear Mr. Pope,

I can not continue to support an "environmental watchdog" that barks at trivial threats like "the quality of the air we breathe" while virtually ignoring more serious issues, particularly global population growth.  The "spoilers and exploiters" are us.  It is pure fantasy to think that a little recycling here and a compact fluorescent bulb there can hold back the tide of environmental destruction driven by our increasing numbers.

Until the Sierra Club takes a prominent role in the difficult work of restraining population growth, I'm sending my support elsewhere.  When I start seeing headlines like "Pope Calls for Lower Birth Rates," I'll be in touch.
