Current Research Interests

Cellular Biotechnologies: 1. Anti-cancer drug production in suspension cultures of gymnosperms. 2. Effects of microgravity on cell growth and development. 3. Morphological and biochemical control of programmed cell death (apoptosis). 4. Intermediary nitrogen metabolism with emphasis on amino acids, guanidines, nitric oxide, and high-valued metabolites. 5. Applications of molecular genetics and protoplast technologies to the study of mitosis, meiosis, apomeiosis, and free-nuclear cycling in cells.

Tree Improvement: 1. Apomixis with emphasis on diploid parthenogenesis, somatic embryogenesis, and monozygotic polyembryony. 2. Capturing genetic gains, development of flexible breeding systems through biotechnology. 3. Adaptive reproductive plasticity. 4. New uses for underutilized species.

Climatic Change: 1. Adaptive fitness, phenotypic changes. 2. Simulation of Mesozoic and Permian climatic conditions in relation to the life history of cells under artificial conditions. 3. Instrumentation and monitoring the effects of UV radiation in plants (Ukraine, Tajikistan).

Consultation: 1. Impact assessment of biotechnology transfer. 2. Training programs for newly industrialized economies. 3.Value-added products and new formulations in health care and in the industrial context.

Awards

NASA "Space Act' Innovation Award (2003) for inventions and scientific and technical contributions that have helped NASA to achieve its aeronautical and space goals. The award included the "Recovery of taxanes and drugs by cell and biosynthetic surface enrichment with anti-drug magnetic antibodies" and for service on the Scientific Working Group for the Biotechnology Facility on the International Space Station. The patent was described in NASA's Technical Brief, September pages 66-67, 2002 entitled 'Enhanced bioproduction and extraction of taxanes".
