Florence Zakharov

Florence Zakharov - Principal Investigator

Research Focus: I am fascinated by the wealth of volatile compounds that plants produce and their functions as the plant’s “language” to communicate with the surroundings. My research program is focused on elucidating the biosynthetic pathways leading to volatile formation and understanding the molecular and biochemical regulation of aroma synthesis during ripening and postharvest storage. One of the long term goals of my research is to improve the aroma quality of fruits in combination with extended shelf life.

Minmin Wang

Minmin Wang - Graduate Student, Plant Biology

Research Focus: I am interested in studying the biosynthetic pathway of aroma in melon.

Elenor Castillo

Elenor Castillo - Graduate Student, Plant Biology

Research Focus: My research is aimed at finding alternatives to pesticides. Coming from three generations of farm workers I understand the potential dangers harsh chemicals can present. Volatile compounds are key components in plant systems to attract and repel certain insects. It is my aim to elucidate these volatile profiles in order to better understand the essential volatiles responsible for repelling insects. By doing so, it is my hope, that alternatives for pesticides can be found.

Anna Hjelmeland - Graduate Student, Agricultural and Environmental Chemistry

Research Focus: I am interested in the formation of norisoprenoids in fruit, namely apricots and wine grapes. I am using molecular biological techniques to look at gene expression of the enzymes responsible for their formation, the Carotenoid Cleavage Dioxygenases (CCDs), and analytical techniques to quantify their levels in fruit as well as the levels of their precursors, carotenoids.
