Heartleaves

Our lab is interested in optimizing the tradeoff between crop water use and growth. Through evolution, natural plants elegantly solve plant functional problems and form a source of inspiration for us - here is an illustration of Givnishs’ idea that plants with vertically oriented petioles must also have “heart” shaped leaves so as to maximize mechanical balance. In order to balance the horizontal leaf, the center of gravity (circles) corresponds with the point of petiole attachment (lines).
