Postharvest handling systems to maintain quality and safety of fruits and nuts.

As an Assistant Cooperative Extension Specialist and Assistant Pomologist, my responsibilities involve 60% extension and 40% research. My extension and research activities encompass postharvest of the following crops: nectarine, fresh market peach, plum, apricot, kiwifruit, figs, olive, table grape and Asian pear.

The goal of my research program is to develop information toward gaining a better understanding of the preharvest and postharvest factors that control fruit quality and storage and to develop technology to overcome fruit industry problems.

The areas of my ongoing research activities are:

* Developing systems to deliver more tasty fruit to consumers.

* Understanding internal breakdown on peaches, nectarines and plums under California conditions.

* Studies on kiwifruit and stone fruit softening and ripening.

* Investigating factors that cause stem browning and other deterioration problems in Table Grape.

* Exploring non-destructive techniques to determine maturity and to measure fruit quality.

* Educating fruit harvestors and retailers on how to hanlde fruit to satisfy customers.
