RESEARCH INTEREST

Integration of molecular marker technology and genomics tools with conventional breeding methods in the development of improved crops with higher yield, better quality, increased economic and nutritive value, and resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses

 RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

o       As a rice breeder in a national program, and part of a rice varietal improvement team, developed, evaluated and tested rice lines leading to the   release of rice varieties for upland and rainfed rice culture

o       Provided technical leadership in establishing, preparing, implementing, coordinating, managing, and reviewing rice breeding projects

o       Involved with collaborative projects dealing with genetics of important agronomic traits, pyramiding resistance genes using molecular markers, shuttle breeding, genotype x environment interaction analyses using regression, AMMI and pattern analysis, and crop modeling

o       Streamlined the use of molecular markers that lead to more efficient, faster, and high-throughput genotyping and developed procedures for efficient screening of rice lines for cold tolerance using growth chamber and greenhouse facilities

o       Conducted studies on genetics of cold tolerance in rice and developed a large population suited for quantitative trait loci analysis of rice traits, and designed molecular markers for marker-assisted selection, backcrossing and gene pyramiding

o       Identified and fine-mapped major genes and QTL controlling tolerance to low temperature stress of M202 at seedling and booting stages that are useful for California and screened diverse germplasm for association mapping

TECHNICAL SKILLS

o       Experienced in conventional selection techniques and non-traditional breeding methods, field plot techniques and experimental designs

o       Proficient in the development of high-density genetic maps, and development of molecular markers for high-resolution mapping.

o       Proficient in high-throughput plant DNA extraction and genotyping procedures, PCR–based techniques including multiplexing, application of molecular marker systems especially microsatellite and ORF-based markers for marker-assisted selection/backcrossing, sequence analysis and identification of candidate genes underlying QTL

o       Proficient in the operation of DNA sequencers (ABI 377, CEQ 8000), liquid-handling robots, PCR machines, and other molecular lab equipment

o       Proficient with database applications, spreadsheet softwares, and statistics softwares in both Mac and PC platforms such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Mapmaker, QGene, Plabqtl, Mapqtl, Genescan, Genotyper, Systat, Statview, Geneflow, Agrobase and various Web-based databases and search tools.

o       Experienced in the development of assays and screening procedures to phenotype plant traits  specifically cold tolerance related attributes
