later leaves are slender, flat, with prominent midrib

Mature plant
grows 3 to 5 feet high
stems have several slender, tapering, alternate leaves
flower head has several egg-shaped flower clusters with pointed tips
rhizomes form dark brown, very hard tubers
Management
Freezing kills the tubers
Deep plow field to a depth of 8 to 12 inches and follow with a rotation to a nonirrigated crop or to fallow
Difficult to control with herbicides
