Dee Madderra Receives “Disability Awareness Award” at Soaring to New Heights

Staff and faculty at UC Davis were honored with Diversity, Principles of Community, and Disability Awareness Awards at the 29th annual Soaring to New Heights event on April 10. More than 700 people attended the event. Five of the individual awards for disability awareness went to supervisors for their responsiveness to employees’ needs for accommodations.

Deidra “Dee” Madderra, chief administrative officer in the Department of Plant Sciences, was one of the recipients of a Disability Awareness Award.

“What makes Dee such a great Disability Management Services partner is her willingness to reach out early and often when faced with issues that require the interactive process and reasonable accommodation,” noted one of her nominators. “Dee has faced some very difficult and complex situations and is always guided by law, policy and heart.”Event sign

Among Madderra’s many responsibilities as CAO, she consults with disability management services in advance for medical leaves or accommodations for faculty and staff in the department, and makes sure that the employee and supervisor have the right information.

“We all work very hard here,” said Madderra. “When someone needs a medical leave or an accommodation, as managers we do our best to give employees options to help them during a time when they need it the most.”

Kudos to Dee Madderra for an award well-earned.
