DONALD J. NEVINS

Birth: July 6, 1937, San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Death: July 8, 2025, Woodland, Calif.

Overview:
Professor Nevins was appointed to the Department of Vegetable Crops in 1984, and he served as chair until 1989. Professor Nevins' research interests focused primarily on the cell wall of plants, including the biophysical mechanisms affecting processes such as plant ripening, for example. As a teacher, he developed and taught a well-received general education course called "Plants and People." In recognition of his work, he was appointed as a fellow of the Japanese Society of the Promotion of Science in 1990. Later, he was selected as a fellow in the Yamada Foundation. Nevins retired from the Department of Plant Sciences in 2013.

Complex carbohydrates comprising the plant cell wall; enzymic mechanisms for the bioconversion of plant materials.
