Born: Vroman, Colorado, August 18, 1906
Died: Davis, California, November 2, 1969
Marriage: Jewel A. Norris - June 22, 1929
Children: Gretchen McDonald, Richard Davis, and Robert Davis
Education: 

  • Fowler High School, Fowler, Colorado and Pueblo Central High School, Pueblo, Colorado, 1919-1923
  • Colorado State College, Ft. Collins, Colorado, receiving the B.S. in Agronomy, 1929
  • Iowa State College, Ames, Iowa, M.S. 1930,  Ph.D. 1934

Employment: 

  • Research Fellow and Research Graduate Assistant at Iowa State College 1929-1934
  • Research Assistant, Agricultural Experiment Station, Iowa State College, 1934-1938
  • Professor in Truck Crops and Olericulturist, University of California at Davis, 1938-1969
    • Served twice as acting chairman of the department.

Research and Professional Interests: 

  • Plant breeding of cucurbits, melons, onions and potatoes Developed the following varieties:
    • Cantaloupes - Baby Persian, Golden Pershaw, PMR-5, PMR-6, PMR-7, Jacumba, and Campo
    • Watermelons - Baby Klondike and RS-57 Klondike
    • Squash - Orange Banana
    • Onions - Hybrid Red, San Joaquin, and Excel
